Axie Infinity is a blockchain gaming universe centered on collectible creatures called Axies. The official whitepaper describes Axies as player-owned digital assets that can be bought, sold, and traded like physical collectibles, with genetic data and art assets accessible to third parties.

The project is designed as an open-ended digital-pet universe rather than one single game. Axie NFTs act as tickets or base-layer assets for current and future experiences, including competitive battles, quests, land-related experiences, and community-built tools. The ecosystem is developed by Sky Mavis with community participation.

Axie's economy combines game activity and on-chain ownership. Players can collect and breed Axies, compete for leaderboard rewards and Smooth Love Potion (SLP), trade assets, and potentially contribute content or tools. The project's stated mission is to deliver property rights to internet users, starting with gamers, while progressively decentralizing ownership and governance.

Traditional games generally keep characters, items, and economies under the publisher's control; players cannot freely transfer assets or participate in the economic upside created by their activity. Axie addresses this ownership problem by representing creatures and other items as blockchain assets that users can hold, trade, and use across experiences.

The project also targets fragmented, closed game economies and limited creator participation. Its whitepaper describes open access to Axie art and genetic data so third parties can build tools and experiences, while AXS governance and the Community Treasury are intended to align players, developers, and ecosystem contributors.

This model introduces substantial risks: game demand, asset prices, token emissions, marketplace liquidity, smart-contract security, and policy can change. The official whitepaper explicitly calls Axie experimental technology and says priorities, roadmaps, and features may be overhauled.

Axies are NFTs with body parts and genetic attributes. The whitepaper's breeding specification describes six body parts plus a body shape, with dominant, recessive, and minor-recessive genes. Breeding creates offspring, but each Axie has a maximum of seven breeds to limit population growth; breeding also excludes parent-child and sibling pairings.

Breeding costs AXS and SLP, with the SLP amount increasing by breed count. SLP is earned through gameplay such as PvP Arena activity rather than sold directly by Axie Infinity in the cited whitepaper. Eggs mature after five days, after which they can be morphed into adult Axies and their genes revealed.

AXS (Axie Infinity Shards) is the ecosystem's ERC-20 governance token. The official token documentation says holders can stake AXS, participate in governance votes, and earn rewards through staking, gameplay, and user-generated-content initiatives; AXS is also part of breeding fees. The Community Treasury receives marketplace and breeding-fee inflows and is intended to become governed by AXS stakers as decentralization progresses.

Axie-specific infrastructure includes Ronin, an Ethereum-linked sidechain created by Sky Mavis for Axie Infinity.
