BNB bnb
What is BNB?
BNB (Binance Coin) is the native utility coin of the BNB Chain ecosystem and a utility asset on Binance's centralized exchange. It began in 2017 as an exchange token, then became the native gas, staking, and governance asset for BNB Chain. BNB Chain now spans BNB Smart Chain (BSC), opBNB, and BNB Greenfield; BNB is also tradable and transferable like other cryptoassets.
What problem does BNB solve?
Crypto users and developers need a liquid utility asset that can pay exchange costs and fund activity on a low-cost smart-contract network. BNB links Binance exchange utility (fee payment/discounts, VIP status and token-distribution programs) with BNB Chain execution, staking, governance, and ecosystem access. This concentration also creates dependence on Binance-related products, BNB Chain demand, validator governance, and regulatory/operational risks.
How does BNB work?
On Binance, users hold BNB in Spot Account and enable BNB Deduction to pay eligible trading fees; Binance documents up to 25% Spot/Margin fee savings and up to 10% Futures savings (VIP terms can differ). On BSC, BNB is the native gas coin required for transaction fees and smart-contract interactions; BSC is EVM-compatible and uses Proof-of-Staked-Authority, with BNB staking securing the network and governance allowing proposal submission/voting and on-chain changes. BNB is burned through three complementary mechanisms: quarterly Auto-Burn based on average BNB price and BSC block production, BEP-95 real-time burning of a validator-determined portion of gas fees in each block (initial ratio 10%, adjustable by validator governance), and the Pioneer Burn Program for eligible provably lost BNB. Auto-Burn targets reducing the initial 200M supply to under 100M; BNB Chain's July 15, 2026 36th-burn announcement reports 1,615,827.795 BNB burned and 133,166,127.91 BNB remaining supply at publication.
Key facts
- Ticker: BNB; CoinGecko identifier: binancecoin
- Launched in 2017 with an initial total supply of 200,000,000 BNB
- BNB is native gas coin for BNB Smart Chain (BSC), and supports BNB Chain ecosystem services including opBNB and Greenfield
- BSC is EVM-compatible and operates with Proof-of-Staked-Authority (PoSA); BNB staking helps secure the network
- Binance documents up to 25% Spot/Margin trading-fee discount and up to 10% Futures discount when BNB Deduction is enabled and balance is sufficient; discounts are subject to terms and may change
- BNB utility on Binance includes fee payment/discounts, VIP-level benefits, and access to Launchpool, HODLer Airdrops, and Megadrop/token-distribution programs
- BNB Chain describes BNB for transaction fees, staking rewards, and governance; governance covers protocol upgrades, system enhancements, ecosystem-impact decisions, and critical fixes
- BNB Auto-Burn runs approximately quarterly using average BNB price and blocks produced; lower average price increases formula-derived burn, while higher price decreases it
- BEP-95, activated November 2021, burns a portion of gas fees from every BSC block in real time; Binance Academy states the initial ratio was 10% and is validator-governance adjustable
- Pioneer Burn reimburses eligible users for provably lost BNB while burning an equivalent amount; it is incorporated in quarterly Auto-Burn totals
- 36th quarterly burn (2026-07-15): 1,615,827.795 BNB burned (~$931.7M at event time), with 133,166,127.91 BNB remaining supply per BNB Chain announcement
- BNB Chain documents a blackhole address (0x000000000000000000000000000000000000dEaD) for direct on-chain burns after BNB Chain Fusion

Frequently asked questions
What is BNB used for on Binance?
BNB can pay eligible trading fees when BNB Deduction is enabled and can reduce fees (Binance currently documents up to 25% on Spot/Margin and up to 10% on Futures, subject to terms). Holding/subscribing BNB can also provide VIP benefits and access to Launchpool, HODLer Airdrops, and Megadrop programs.
What is BNB's role on BNB Chain?
BNB is the native gas coin for BSC, paying transaction and smart-contract fees. It is also used for staking to help secure the PoSA network and for participating in BNB Chain on-chain governance.
How does BNB Auto-Burn work?
The quarterly Auto-Burn uses on-chain block count and average BNB price to calculate the amount destroyed. Binance describes the formula as B = N/(100 x P) x K, where N is blocks, P average BNB USD price, and K an anchor constant initially set at 1,000. It is separate from continuous BEP-95 gas-fee burns.
What is BEP-95?
BEP-95 is the real-time burn mechanism activated in November 2021. A portion of gas fees collected by validators in each BSC block is automatically destroyed; its initial burn ratio was 10% and can be adjusted through validator governance.
Is BNB supply capped at 100 million?
BNB launched with 200 million tokens and is not described as having a fixed 100-million issuance cap. Its long-term burn target is to reduce supply below 100 million through quarterly Auto-Burn, BEP-95, and Pioneer Burn mechanisms.
What are the main risks of BNB?
BNB carries crypto price/market and liquidity risk; dependence on Binance exchange products and policy; BSC smart-contract, bridge, oracle, validator, governance, and network-outage risks; changing fee-discount/airdrop terms; burn-rate uncertainty; and regulatory/custody risks.
