What is Shiba Inu?

Shiba Inu (SHIB) is an Ethereum-based cryptocurrency and community-led ecosystem that began in 2020 as a meme coin inspired by the Shiba Inu dog. It is an ERC-20 token rather than its own base-layer blockchain. The project has expanded beyond the meme into a family of tokens and applications: SHIB is the widely distributed community token; BONE is used for Shibarium gas and ecosystem governance/rewards; LEASH is a scarce ecosystem token; and TREAT is positioned by the project as an ecosystem utility/rewards token. Shiba Inu's main scaling and application environment is Shibarium, an Ethereum Layer 2, while ShibaSwap provides decentralized exchange and liquidity features across Ethereum and Shibarium.

The ecosystem combines social/community coordination, decentralized finance, NFTs and metaverse/creator experiments. It is important to distinguish the SHIB token from the broader Shiba Inu ecosystem: holding SHIB does not by itself confer governance, revenue, or guaranteed access to every ecosystem application, and third-party projects using Shiba branding are not automatically official.

What problem does Shiba Inu solve?

Shiba Inu's original pitch was a community-driven, permissionless alternative to centrally issued meme currencies and an experiment in decentralized community formation. As it grew, the ecosystem sought to address Ethereum's cost and throughput constraints for small trades, games, NFTs and consumer applications. Shibarium is intended to provide lower-cost, faster execution for those activities while retaining Ethereum compatibility and a bridge to Ethereum assets. ShibaSwap addresses the need to trade and provide liquidity without a centralized exchange, while its newer concentrated-liquidity design aims to use LP capital more efficiently.

These are design goals, not guarantees: meme-coin demand is highly speculative; liquidity, security, bridge reliability, governance participation and application quality vary; and DeFi users can lose funds through smart-contract bugs, impermanent loss, oracle failures, exploits or malicious tokens.

How does Shiba Inu work?

SHIB is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Users hold it in Ethereum-compatible wallets and transfer or trade it through smart contracts and exchanges. Shibarium is an Ethereum Layer 2 with EVM-compatible tooling; its official documentation identifies chain ID 109, BONE as the network currency symbol, RPC https://rpc.shibarium.shib.io and explorer https://shibariumscan.io. Users can bridge supported assets between Ethereum and Shibarium, then use Shibarium dApps and pay network gas in BONE.

ShibaSwap is the ecosystem's DEX. v1 uses classic automated-market-maker pools and LP tokens; v2 is based on Uniswap v3 architecture, with concentrated liquidity, multiple fee tiers, oracle integration and non-fungible LP positions representing selected price ranges. Liquidity providers earn trading fees, but concentrated positions can go out of range and all LPs face impermanent-loss and smart-contract risk. On Ethereum, the documented v1 yield-farming flow stakes LP tokens for BONE rewards; the current docs describe v2 rewards as trading fees and time-in-range bonuses.

The ecosystem also uses NFTs for digital collectibles and, in ShibaSwap v2, LP positions. Shibarium documentation presents NFTs, marketplaces, creator applications and dApps as intended use cases. SHIB supply history includes an initial one-quadrillion-token issuance; a large amount was sent to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who burned most of it and donated part to charity in 2021. Subsequent burns are not automatic proof of scarcity or future value; users should verify the specific burn mechanism and transaction on-chain.

Key facts

  • Launch: SHIB was launched in 2020 by the pseudonymous creator Ryoshi as a community-led meme-coin experiment
  • Ticker and standard: SHIB; ERC-20 token originally deployed on Ethereum
  • Ecosystem: Shiba Inu includes SHIB, BONE, LEASH and TREAT, plus Shibarium, ShibaSwap and community/developer applications
  • Shibarium: Ethereum Layer 2; official network chain ID 109; native gas currency symbol BONE; official explorer shibariumscan.io
  • ShibaSwap: DEX available on Ethereum and Shibarium; v1 uses classic AMM pools, while v2 uses concentrated liquidity and NFT LP positions
  • DeFi: users can swap tokens, supply liquidity, farm/stake in supported programs and perform cross-chain trading; returns and availability are not guaranteed
  • NFTs: ShibaSwap v2 LP positions are NFTs, and Shibarium documentation targets NFT marketplaces, digital collectibles and creator applications
  • Supply history: initial SHIB issuance was 1 quadrillion tokens; a large Vitalik Buterin allocation was mostly burned in 2021, with part donated to charity
  • Security caveat: Shibarium bridges, tokens and third-party dApps require independent contract/address verification; the official docs warn users to verify token addresses and network settings

Frequently asked questions

Is Shiba Inu a blockchain?

No. SHIB is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Shibarium is the ecosystem's separate Ethereum Layer 2 for lower-cost transactions and dApps; SHIB can be used there through supported bridging and applications.

What is Shibarium used for?

Shibarium is designed for lower-cost, faster transactions and for deploying EVM-compatible dApps such as DEXs, lending and other DeFi protocols, games, NFT marketplaces and creator applications. Its official network currency symbol is BONE, not SHIB.

What is BONE's relationship to SHIB?

BONE is a separate Shiba ecosystem token. Shibarium documentation lists BONE as the network currency symbol, so users generally need BONE for gas there. BONE has also been used for ecosystem governance, staking and rewards; it is not the same asset as SHIB.

What can I do on ShibaSwap?

ShibaSwap lets users swap supported tokens, provide liquidity and earn trading fees or supported rewards. v1 uses classic pools and LP tokens; v2 adds concentrated liquidity, fee tiers and NFT positions.

Does Shiba Inu have NFTs?

Yes. The ecosystem has used NFTs and digital collectibles, and Shibarium documentation lists NFT marketplaces and creator applications as use cases. ShibaSwap v2 also represents concentrated-liquidity LP positions as NFTs.

How were SHIB tokens burned?

The best-known historical burn occurred when Vitalik Buterin burned most of the large SHIB allocation sent to him in 2021 and donated part to charity. Later ecosystem burn mechanisms may depend on particular contracts or applications.

Is SHIB a good investment?

No general investment conclusion is justified. SHIB is a highly speculative crypto asset whose demand is influenced by meme culture, community activity, liquidity, ecosystem adoption and broader markets.

How do I avoid fake Shiba Inu tokens and links?

Start from official Shiba Inu documentation and verify the network, contract address and explorer before signing transactions. Never assume a token, NFT, bridge or social account is official merely because it uses Shiba branding.
